I dreamed I worked for this stern man who demanded a lot from his employees, but I was doing a good job. He said I was a workhorse, which I am irl too. I do work hard for employers and clients. I get nervous and try really hard to do a good job always fearful of disappointing them. So I guess that was reflected in this dream. Anyway, back to the dream, it seems like he may have run an advertising agency. We were at his office, and I had to set it up for clients. He liked the blinds set just right so that the sun didn’t blind him. At one point, he mentioned how he gave all his employers nicknames. He looked at me and said nicknames kept coming to him for me, but he hadn’t settled on one yet. I said that made sense. I was still shifting and becoming who I am. To a woman sitting next to him, I explained that I’m coming into who I am. That I always had a poor self-esteem and self-worth. I was an overachiever because I hoped it proved my worth, and that it’s been coming to me that I want friends who like and appreciate me just for me and my personality. And I don’t want to have to earn respect through accomplishments anymore. (This is very true IRL too. 100% reflected in this dream.) Back to the dream, so I explained to the woman sitting next to my boss that I think this is why my boss hasn’t come up with a nickname for me yet. I’m still coming into myself. The hard work I do for him is shifting to coming more from just what I want to do over trying so very hard to prove myself to him. Next, there was a presentation with my boss sitting on a panel, like at a table with several others. In front of their table, they were demonstrating things for their potential clients. One of the demonstrations included a baby. The baby was just sitting there doing nothing. My boss called me over and asked if I could do something to help the baby. I said “sure, but what is the baby supposed to be doing? What’s the context so I understand what to encourage him to do?” My boss said, “well the baby is good at dreams.” I think he meant like dreams in life, like goals, not dreams in your sleep. So maybe the baby was good at motivating people, or entertaining. IDK. I started playing with the baby. He seemed to like me and started entertaining the potential clients. I slightly picked the baby up and sat him down. Two cops came over and pulled me away. It was weird. IRL, this isn’t something that would happen. I said my boss asked me to help with the baby. They said no one could be close to the baby, like while the baby was there in front of the clients. I was annoyed with them. They were being ugly and sarcastic. I said something like, “you should learn how to treat people better.” This is not characteristic of me IRL. I would have just agreed to do what they said. When they walked off, I turned to my boyfriend and said I wished I would keep my mouth shut around those who had power over me. I jokingly said, “I’m scared to speak up for myself around everyone else, but with someone with power over me, I speak up.” Like I was saying that wasn’t very smart of me to do. (IRL, I don’t have a boyfriend, and I’m not like this. I rarely ever speak up for myself to anyone, or only in super gentle and subtle ways.) But back to the dream, I said something like I wish that police officers would learn to be respectful and kind to people. One of the cops rushed over and said, “what did you say?” Like in an ugly, mean way. I said that I said we should all be very respectful of cops (obviously shifting what I really said, sort of being facetious). Again, not what I would do IRL. Such an odd dream. Parts of it really hitting home, and other parts so different from the real me or real life.
Dreams often serve as mirrors reflecting our subconscious mind, showcasing unaddressed issues, fears, and desires. Here is a detailed interpretation of the dream you described:
The Stern Boss: Working for a demanding boss who sees you as a "workhorse" represents your own feelings and experiences about being hardworking and the pressure you feel in your waking life. This scenario mirrors your real-life tendencies of overachievement and seeking validation through work. The boss's appreciation yet indecision about your nickname symbolizes your ongoing journey of self-discovery and personal transformation.
Office Setup and Nickname: Adjusting the blinds for clients suggests your desire to create the right appearance and avoid exposing any vulnerabilities. The conversation about your nickname reflects your current state of self-evolution—your acknowledgment that you’re still defining who you are and what you value—transitioning from proving your worth to valuing yourself inherently.
Presentation and the Baby: The baby in the dream likely symbolizes a new beginning or aspect of yourself that is currently developing. When the boss mentions the baby being "good at dreams," it could refer to goals, ambitions, or a part of your psyche that fosters hope and inspiration. Your interaction with the baby and its ability to entertain clients can imply your natural capacity to inspire and engage when you are more attuned to your true self.
Confrontation with the Cops: The police represent authority and self-control. Being reprimanded for helping the baby signifies the internal conflict between your desire to nurture and create and external societal or authoritative constraints. Your reaction, boldly speaking your mind, is an expression of a hidden desire to assert yourself more confidently and challenge authority constructively, contrasting with how you normally act—reserved and careful.
Interaction with the Boyfriend: Although you mentioned not having a boyfriend in real life, this character in your dream might represent an idealized version of support or the masculine aspect of your psyche that encourages you to speak up and stand your ground.
Reflection on Authority and Respect: Your wish for the police officers to be more respectful and your subsequent comments play out as an internal dialogue. This is an examination of how you deal with authority figures—an area where you may want to grow, becoming more courageous, honest, and self-assured in real life.
Facets of the Real You vs. Different Persona: The dream juxtaposes real-life fears with fantasy scenarios. This contrast reflects your awareness of how much you’ve changed or want to change in terms of asserting your worth independently of others’ evaluations and societal expectations.
In essence, this dream explores themes of self-worth, identity, and personal empowerment. The blend of familiar and unfamiliar reactions and characters suggests an ongoing internal dialogue about adapting and growing, advocating for more authenticity and self-respect in daily life. It encourages you to align more closely with your real values and desires, and explore how you might shift your approaches to relationships, authority, and self-validation.
